Back Story & Wine Information

Semillon, especially in South Africa where it was once dominant (90%+ of vineyards, called ‘wyndruif’ or ‘green grape’), is a tale of immense popularity, near disappearance after phylloxera and KWV quotas, and a recent renaissance as winemakers rediscover its potential, especially in blends with Sauvignon Blanc or aged, complex styles . It arrived with French Huguenots, became the workhorse grape, then fell out of favor due to its bulk wine reputation and the rise of Chardonnay/Sauvignon Blanc, but is now valued for its aging ability and texture.

Pairing
Excellent with seafood, fish and chips, light spice, and Asian dishes.
