Rustenburg Stellenbosch Malbec

Malbec has found a welcoming home in Stellenbosch, flourishing along with the other Bordeaux red varietals that the region is renowned for. The variety is best known in Stellenbosch for producing very expressive wines that are more approachable in their youth than Cabernet and Merlot, medium-bodied with fine tannins and a generous mid-palate. A great wine to enjoy on its own or with a wide variety of roasted meats, Italian fare, or mushroom based dishes. As with all Rustenberg’s red wines, decanting before serving is recommended.

In its youth, the wine exhibits very attractive purple hues with dark fruit flavours, such as plum, blackberry and violets, along with pepper and tobacco. As the wine ages, it will reveal a more savoury fruit profile. AWARDS

Back Story & Wine Information

Originally granted in 1682 to a German settler, Rustenberg farm was bought by Peter and Pamela Barlow in 1941. They produce roughly 120 000 bottles annually from mainly red Bordeaux grape varieties cultivated in the rich Stellenbosch soils at the foot of the majestic Simonsberg Mountain. The force behind the 21st century renewal is Simon Barlow, son of Peter and Pamela. Simon considers himself to be a custodian of the farm, and is driven by his vision of “absolute passion and total dedication to quality in both the vineyard and cellar”. Today production is closer to 900 000 bottles.

Pairing
Meats and Proteins Beef: Leaner cuts of steak, such as sirloin or flank steak, grilled or char-grilled. Lamb: Herb-crusted roast lamb or grilled lamb chops with rosemary and garlic are classic pairings. Poultry: Dark meat poultry, such as duck or chicken in a rich tomato sauce, also works well. Pork: Roasted pork dishes. Vegetarian Mushroom-based dishes: Grilled or roasted Portobello mushrooms, mushroom risotto, or a wild mushroom, lentil, and chestnut ragu are excellent choices. Vegetables: Roasted vegetables, especially bell peppers and carrots, help enhance the wine's smoky and herbal notes. Other Pairings Italian Fare: Pasta dishes, especially those with rich, meaty, or creamy sauces like a meaty lasagne or creamy mushroom pasta. Cheese: Semi-hard to hard cheeses such as aged cheddar, Gouda, or blue cheese. Spicy Food: Dishes with a little spice, such as beef empanadas or a blue cheese burger with caramelized onions.
