Back Story & Wine Information

Deetlefs Wine Estate in Rawsonville is South Africa’s second-oldest family-owned wine estate, established in 1822 and spanning seven generations of the Deetlefs family. • The European Roots: The family’s lineage traces back to German soldier Johannes Deetlefs, who originally founded roots in Roodezand (Tulbagh) after a voyage that began in Europe in October 1752 aboard the Hageveld. • Establishment in Breedekloof: Between 1816 and 1822, Nicolaas Johannes Deetlefs moved the family to the Goudini/Rawsonville area (De Grootte Eiland) at the foot of the Du Toitskloof Mountains.
